Rationale for Banning the Use of Starlink Services at Blenheim Palace International Horse Trials
- Interference with Official WiFi Services: Starlink services have been observed to cause significant interference with the official WiFi network provided by RedBox WiFi. This interference can disrupt connectivity and degrade the quality of service for exhibitors relying on the official network.
- Impact on Exhibitor Experience: The disruption caused by Starlink installations can lead to poor connectivity for nearby exhibitors using the official WiFi. This negatively affects their ability to conduct business effectively, potentially leading to lost sales and a diminished event experience.
- Network Stability: The official WiFi network has been robustly tested to ensure stability and reliability throughout the event. Introducing external, uncoordinated services like Starlink can undermine this stability, leading to unexpected outages or slowdowns.
- Security Concerns: The official WiFi network is managed to ensure high levels of security for all users. Starlink services, being outside the control of event organizers, can introduce vulnerabilities, increasing the risk of data breaches or unauthorized access.
- Uniform Service Quality: By controlling the WiFi service through a single provider, we ensure consistent quality and performance for all exhibitors. Allowing multiple service providers, like Starlink, could lead to disparities in service quality, which can be unfair to exhibitors who rely on the official network.
- Technical Support: The official WiFi provider, RedBox WiFi, offers on-site technical support to quickly resolve any issues. Starlink services do not come with the same level of support, which can delay problem resolution and disrupt the event.
- Compliance with Event Regulations: The use of a single, controlled WiFi service ensures that all exhibitors are compliant with the event’s technical standards and regulations. Starlink services operate independently and may not comply with these standards, leading to potential regulatory issues.
- Avoiding Signal Overcrowding: The use of multiple WiFi networks in close proximity can lead to overcrowded radio frequencies, resulting in signal degradation for all users. Banning Starlink helps prevent this and ensures a clearer, more reliable signal for everyone.
- Customer Satisfaction: Ensuring that all exhibitors have access to a reliable and high-performing WiFi service is key to their satisfaction and the overall success of the event. Banning disruptive services like Starlink helps maintain a positive experience for all participants.
- Liability Management: As event organizers, we are responsible for the technical environment provided to exhibitors. By limiting WiFi services to our appointed supplier, we reduce the risk of technical issues that could lead to claims or disputes, ensuring a smoother event operation.
The organisers will continue to consult expert Wi-Fi providers. With technology in this sector innovating and updating continuously, we will review the options available to us regularly and will implement best practice available at the time.
